I was too. And from time to time I still feel that way. The reason is my chronic inability to manage my own stress levels. When things get crazy with work or with the kids (often happens simultaneously) my stress levels take off, my adrenal glands go into over drive and then eventually I can feel the effects. And sometimes they just go on STRIKE!

Confession time, I am horrible about asking for help and/or saying no to something that is asked of me. I have this unhealthy tendency to try to shoulder everything myself. I think this is common among moms actually. “No one is going to tell me that I can’t do absolutely everything, all the time, at the same time and not do the absolute best I can!” What am I? 3? What is with me? Geez!

So today I went to my Chiropractor, Dr Brian Boyd for an adjustment. As usual we discuss how I have been feeling. I’ve been feeling really great actually, except the last week or so, I have not been sleeping really well. I explained my new project and how excited I was and I was sure it was just the excitement of the new adventure. However, I decided to not drink caffeine for a bit, thinking that my help me sleep better. After a few more questions, I get on the table and Dr. Boyd does his usual drill and low and behold I have messed up my adrenals! Again! When will I learn?

Adrenal Fatigue, if you haven’t heard of it, look it up. There is actually a neat little website I found called womentowomen.com that actually has a list of syptoms and questions and will give you an idea as to your adrenal fatigue score based on your age group. I tested myself this time and the good news is I was a 52(out of 55) instead of my ususal “off the charts!” score. I attribute this to my diet because if you look at the recommended diet to alleviate adrenal fatigue is very similar to the Paleo Diet.

Another great resource is www.adrenalfatigue.org. There are supplements I can take to calm it down but since I have the diet part down already what I really need to do is CHILL THE HECK OUT!!!!!

How do you know if adrenal fatigue might be an issue for you? Take a look at some common symptoms below. If they apply to you, go to A NATURAL HEALTH practitioner like Dr Boyd. I hate to say it but my regular doctor was no help with this. Below are some symptoms to consider.

  • You feel tired for no reason.
  • You have trouble getting up in the morning, even when you go to bed at a reasonable hour.
  • You are feeling rundown or overwhelmed.
  • You have difficulty bouncing back from stress or illness.
  • You crave salty and sweet snacks.
  • You feel more awake, alert and energetic after 6PM than you do all day
  • You have trouble falling asleep and/or staying asleep
  • You are always on the run
  • You feel like you “can never do enough”

For some practical guidence on how to manage and overcome this include dietary changes which are very similar to the Paleo Diet, regular excerise that is not inflammatory, reduce stress levels (yoga/meditation work great) but honestly I can not encourage you enough to check out these websites to learn more and for real treatment seek the help of a natural health practioner.

Ok, now I am going to go chill out and hang with the kiddos (if they’ll let me….I am rapidly becoming less cool as they get older) and give my adrenals a break!

Until tomorrow….

Hi Damary! I think it applies to many people. Particularly busy moms! Our bodies just weren’t meant to handle this kind if stress load. I hope it helps! Information is POWER! ๐Ÿ™‚

Thanks for all this wonderful info! I took the quiz on W2W and found out I am experiencing quite a few symptoms — not a shocker to me, but still helpful to see. I also found this article on how to eat for adrenal support: http://www.womentowomen.com/adrenalhealth/adrenalglandfunction-nutrition.aspx Lots of interesting pointers for meal spacing.

Hi Jacqueline! I’m so glad you found it helpful! I think millions of people suffer from this and are never diagnosed. I found the website helpful as well. Thanks for reading and commenting! I love it!
