This is my new office chair for my home office. I am usually on the road, driving from client to client most days, but one day a week I sit on my ass in an office chair. I can just feel my ass getting bigger and bigger as I spend 8 hours on it just sitting there. I can only imagine what it might be like if I had to do that every day.

One of my clients actually uses a big blue one in her office. Being of a curious nature I looked up the benefits of using a balance ball as a chair.  Here’s what I found.

  1. It supports better posture. The most comfortable way to sit on the ball is with your back relatively straight, not hunched over and with your spine aligned.
  2. It helps develop a stronger core. In order to keep your balance and your spine aligned, your core muscle have to go to work. Every time you move, your core muscles need to move and shifts to stay balanced.
  3. It burns more calories. Now, don’t go thinking this can replace a normal healthy workout schedule, but sitting on a balance ball burns 4 times more calories than sitting in a standard desk chair. Not too shabby!
  4. It improves your sense of balance. This one seems obvious.
  5. You can sneak in a quick little workout here and there. Waiting for a call back? Just need a minute or two of a break from staring at the computer? Do a few crunches or push ups! 😉

One word of caution. If you have a really bad back and require a ergonomic chair, please speak to your doctor first! While the ball will help strengthen your core muscles which will help support a weak back, the last thing you want to do is over stress an already stressed back.

It may also be a good idea to work up to using the ball all day. If your muscles are not used to being engaged all day like that you may want to use some caution and start with using it for a hour, then adding on 30 minutes at a time to build up to feeling comfortable on it all day.

You can find a balance ball at just about any sports or fitness store. I got mine for about $20. They range in price from $15 to $35. Get one that is sturdy and will support your weight. You also want one big enough to get you the right height to reach the desk. I bought a 75cm ball. That gives me enough height to reach my desk and it is not too big for even my short legs to reach to ground comfortably!  You can even find balance ball chairs! They will be more expensive because they come with a base on wheels. You can find one on Amazon, they range in price from $70ish to $100ish.  Here is a link to one by Gaiam. I just bought a regular ball because I like having to use more muscles to move around. If I need to move to the printer or reach for the stapler, I need to use my legs and core differently.

Just a quick tip. I really like using it, maybe you will too!

Until Next TIme,
