I have to be completely honest. I am feeling totally uninspired. Nothing interesting or witty is coming to mind and all I want to do is pig out. I must be hormonal! So I figured I would blog about how I get through these times. Sometimes I get these feelings when I am overtired too. I know physiologically when I don’t get enough sleep or when I’m feeling stressed out or my hormones are out or control, my brain and the body crave food even though I’m not really hungry. Not only does my body crave food, it craves 2 of the big things I gave up eating…starches and sugar….the CRAP! When I deny myself eating the coveted CRAP, then I get crabby with my kids and its makes for a very touchy night in the Channell house.

Experience has taught me that while my body might be saying…..”give me cookies”, “give me ice cream”, “give me CRAP”, if I feed it what I know will calm the beast without totally corrupting everything I believe in nutritionally then I can make us both happy. It is the proverbial devil on my shoulder speaking to me in one ear. Rather than just flicking it off and waiting for it to eventually crawl back on there  deshelved and even more pissed off and demanding, I compromise.

Here is what works for me and I hope it works for you:

If I am craving sweets (which is often the case)

  • One of my Paleo Chocolate chip cookies (see the recipe page, it’s super easy. I bake them then freeze some of them for just such an emergency. Any Paleo baked good works for this actually.)
  • A Chocoperfection bar. I buy these online. They are european chocolate bars that are sweetened with Inulin. Inulin is a fiber often derived from the chicory root, but it comes from other plant sources as well and it is sweet like sugar. No glucose rush and the only carbs are fiber.  (I just got a free sample of the dark chocolate mint! Yippee!)
  • Some of my grainless granola. (see recipe page) or you can buy some yummy grainless granola from StevesOriginal.com. They sell bars too.
  • Some of my coconut milk ice cream. If you do not have an ice cream maker SoDelicious makes a coconut milk ice cream that comes in a no sugar added version sweetened with a little bit of erythritol and monk fruit.
  • Any of the yummy decadent treats from Paleo Treats. With names like “Brownie Bomb”, “Cookie Cacao Now” and “Cookie Mac Attack” how you feel anything but decadent and naughty is beyond me.
  • Mia’s personal favorite the Almond Breeze Ice Cream bites. I am not a fan of the additives, but we are compromising here.

If I am craving something salty:

  • A hard-boiled egg dipped in my Paleo Mayo (see recipe page)and celtic sea salt. If I have the time, a deviled egg is even  more decadent!
  • Some sort of jerky. If you can’t make your own. Steve’s Original makes a great paleo friendly jerky made with grass-fed meats and very little sugar. Whole foods and Trader Joes also sells jerky with minimal offensive ingredients.
  • Celery with almond butter. Ummmm….so good. I have SUPER easy nut butter recipes I’ll post soon.
  • Dry Roasted nuts (except peanuts) technically raw is better but they are not salty and I am in the mood to be bad remember? Dry roasted does not involve those yucky vegetable oils. I have a savory spiced nut recipe I’ll post soon too!
  • Before I gave up cheese, I would eat cheese and Flackers. No, that is not a typo. Flackers are crackers made with flax seeds. You can find them at Whole Foods for sure. Now I use tuna or babagounush or nut butter.
  • Kale Chips, these are my new favorite crunchies! Found at Whole Foods, Fruitful Yield and Trader Joes.
  • Seaweed snacks, sold at Trader Joes.
  • Ooooh! And olives! Ahhh….now I’m feeling inspired!

As you can see, none of these are super “carby”. None of them contain gluten. None of them contain the dairy I can’t eat. There might be a little sugar, but offensive ingredients are minimal to nil depending on the choice.

You know what? I am already feeling better! Thanks for letting me share some of my favorite little naughties, that really aren’t all that naughty. But it is here I want to drive something home. Sometimes nothing will replace (insert naughty food here). I want you to give yourself permission. I use the term naughty but all seriousness we shouldn’t look at our food that way. That is how we end up with unhealthy relationships with food. If allowing yourself to eat a cupcake once in a while makes it easier to treat your body with the respect it deserves most of the time then go ahead. You will find the longer you treat your body with love and respect the less the devil on your shoulder emerges. Your body will love you back and it’s cravings will become less frequent. We are learning more about the anatomy of cravings in nutrition school and I will be prepared to help myself and you deconstruct them when they emerge. I can’t wait! Until then I hope the above list helps you. Now I’m about to go get a bowl of the Banana Coconut Milk Ice Cream I made this weekend! 😉

Until Next Time,

  1. I always crave the CRAP after a holiday…because sometimes I don’t always eat 100 percent during these times. On top of this, I’m going out of town tomorrow night ~ always another OUCH. I’m feeling a sugar detox week coming my way. GOOD LUCK to you (us!) Laura…sometimes venting gets us through!! 🙂

  2. These sound great! Thanks for the ideas! I am a fan of homemade paleo/primal bars, I will be making some tomorrow and will post my creation on my blog.
